The Bounty

Prologue

Kyle leant against the boats railing, wondering where he would find his next target. He wore a navy blue long coat, which was billowing in the wind, dark grey cargo pants with dark brown combat gloves and light grey runners. He had seen a 'wanted' sign in the previous town he was vesting. It read:

Wanted for treason, war crimes and thirteen counts of unprecedented, peacetime murder: Daniel Murdock.

It also stated that his last known location was an island called Mt. Isotope. The island was a previous site of a nuclear reactor before it blew itself, and part of the island, sky-high. After the radiation had slowly faded away, the island became a popular tourist resort.

Kyle knew that Daniel would know he was coming, his underworld contacts warning him of anyone who even looked like they would stand up to him. These spies were embedded in most cities around the world and this made Daniel incredibly difficult to surprise, and even harder to eliminate.

As Kyle continued to ponder his new-found 'quest', several dark-clad figures slipped over the side of the boat and disappeared into the darkness.

Chapter 1

Kyle stepped off the railing and began walking back to his room. The boat he was on, the S.S. Jackson, was a large cruise boat, its passengers staying in complete luxury. It had a pool at both the stern and the bow, over five hundred luxury cabins and several bars and restaurants below deck. As Kyle walked down the corridor leading to his own cabin, he counted the rooms he passed.

116, 118, 120... He thought to himself. As he counted the rooms, he felt as though he was being watched. He had the feeling of several sets of eyes boring into the back of his head. He cautiously reached down under his long coat and felt for his Raptor 160 pistols. He felt nothing. He then realised that he had left the pistols in his room and consequentially sped up.

He rounded a corner and found his room -- Number 134. He opened the door and instantly recognised the lush interior. To his right was an overhead container which contained a Nico R6 automatic assault rifle and ammunition. To his left was a queen-sized bed, with red velvet covers and two silken pillows. Under this were his pistols. At the far end of the room there was a table and several chairs surrounding it. To the right of the table and chairs was a kitchen bench and a refrigerator. On the kitchen bench was a single can of lemonade, a small pool of water surrounding it. Kyle bent down under the bed and retrieved his pistols, which both had the word Damnation inscribed on the side, and some ammunition before tucking them into his holsters. He opened the can and took a swig, and leant behind the refrigerator to grab his sword. The sword had the pattern of gnarled roots climbing up the blade inscribed upon it. He slid the sword into its scabbard which was black with a gold trim around the lock. As he finished tying the last knot of his sword's 'belt' the suite door beeped. Kyle looked up questionly at the door and quickly came to a conclusion of what the beep was. He recognised the sound as the activation beep of a breaching charge - a small explosive used by Special Forces to eradicate locked or otherwise impenetrable doors. Kyle set down his can of lemonade before stepping behind the refrigerator. A moment later there was another beep and the suite door exploded in a cloud of dust and wooden shards.

Chapter 2

Several dark figures dressed in special ops gear filtered their way through the dust of what once was Kyle's door. Kyle clicked the safety off his pistols and turned towards the source of the sound. It was their own dumb luck that they were the first to fall, a bullet burrowing into each man's head. As Kyle leant around the side of the fridge to see what damage he had caused, the figures opened up. As Kyle jerked his head back behind the fridge, bullets impacted upon the wall, bench and the fridge itself. As they slowed their firing, Kyle rolled out from behind his source of cover and fired. Two bullets clipped the arm of the closest intruder, before a third hit him in the throat, blowing it apart. The assailant dropped to the ground, dead. The remaining intruders sought cover, two hiding behind each side of the door and one hid behind the bed, crouched low. Kyle landed on the ground and quickly stood up. He turned and pulled the edge of the table, setting it up as a temporary wall as wll as flinging a chair into the air. As Kyle jumped over this impromptu bullet shield, the chair in the air landed next to the intruder hiding behind the bed. Frightened by this sudden movement, he grabbed his rifle and began blind firing over the edge of the bed, bullets spraying everywhere, ripping up the rear wall and the table which Kyle was crouched behind.

Thank God this thing is a heavy wood... Kyle thought to himself, reloading his pistols. As the empty clips hit the floor, the two intruders behind the door held down their triggers. Once again the room was filled with flying hot lead, the projectiles hitting chairs, tables, fridges -- almost everything in the room got a bullet in it, even Kyle's can of lemonade that was sitting on the kitchen bench. As the clear bubble liquid spurted out of the container Kyle got slightly irritated.

"God Fucking Dammit! That was my last can you shitbricks!" He screamed. He jumped up and over the table and fired his pistols, heedless of the bullets impacting around him. Kyle’s bullets found their mark, several of them ripping apart the skull of the intruder on the right side of the door. Three more hit the door frame next to the left-hand side intruder and sent wooden shards into his face. He dropped the rifle and grabbed at his face, before two more thudded into his chest, dropping him like a stone.

The final intruder sat still, amazed at how much death one man could cause. His teammates were all dead, all because of this one man. He would take vengeance on this spawn, or die trying. He stood up and brought his rifle around to face Kyle, but it was too late. Kyle had already landed and was upon him, sword to his throat.

"Who sent you?" Kyle demanded, already guessing the answer. "Fuck you, Oni!" The man said, struggling against Kyle's grasp. Demon?.. Kyle thought. "Your Japanese?" he asked. "Yes!" The man replied, attempting to break out of Kyle’s grasp. "Don't squirm or I'll pull out your eyes and stick them where the sun don't shine!" Instantly, them an stopped moving and turned to Kyle. "I am a descendant of the samurai, I accept death honourable. You will get no information from me."

Kyle simply smiled. He had faced fanatics like this before. "What if death involves a blender, and your face?" Kyle replied, dragging his hostage over to the kitchen bench, where he pulled out a blender and sat it next to his drained can of lemonade. The mans eyes widened as he looked at the blender's blades and broke down. "Ok, I'll talk." Kyle let go of the man and righted the table, making it look a lot like a regular one, albeit with improved air circulation. Both Kyle and the intruder sat.

"Daniel sent me..Us" The assailant said "He knows your coming and wants you eliminated. He's even contracted other bounty hunters to hunt you. "Thanks for the info" Kyle said. "Your not going to kill me?" The assassin asked. "I'll tell you what," Kyle replied, turning to face the man. "I'm feeling generous. Go back and tell Daniel that you've failed to kill me, and that I will hunt him to the ends of the earth. But...If I ever see you again, I will kill you, no doubt about it."

The man merely nodded, slightly confused. Kyle sheathed his sword and opened the overhead compartment. He grabbed the rifle that lay there, packed some ammunition into his pants and coat and slung the rifle over his back, a leather strap holding it there. "Be seeing you 'round" Kyle said to the man as he left the room, a menacing glint in his eye.
